NMDUnited

NMD United is a not-for-profit organization composed of adults living with neuromuscular disabilities. This peer-led organization fosters meaningful interactions and provides informational resources to increase self-direction while promoting independence. NMD United's origin began with the formation of a Facebook group called "Living with M.D". Members of this online group of adults with muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, and numerous other neuromuscular disabilities (NMDs) realized that many of the socialization and support groups focused mostly on children and their parents. Additionally, the aforementioned groups looked at disability from a medical model perspective. Whereas, the founders of NMD United and the people we serve are adults with NMD who have lived far past medical predictions and are primarily interested in living as independently and productively as our potential will allow. Medical professionals and national charities just don't understand the practical day in and day out considerations of living with NMD. NMD United meets the unmet need for a comprehensive peer support system.​​​Today, more than 1,200 members, all of whom are adults with neuromuscular disabilities, are continuing to connect and create an organization based on a unique body of knowledge and experience about what it means to live with a neuromuscular disability. Created to capture and document what we as a community have learned while living with lifelong neuromusular disabilities, NMD United devised a forum for continued support and growth driven by people with NMD for people with NMD.
