The United States Air Force Security Forces are the Security Forces, Department of the Air Force Police and Air Base Ground Defense (ABGD) forces of the United States Air Force. Security Forces, or simply "SF," were formerly known as Military Police (MP), Air Police (AP), and Security Police (SP). The Security Forces career field has a long, rich history[peacock term] which predates the inception of the Air Force in 1947. The invention of the aircraft and its subsequent military use required a protective force to guard the aircraft and defend the people who fly and fight.
