Psalm 51:7 — “Wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.” — is beautifully overlaid on the beloved painting often called the Polish Madonna, Sobotni Promyk (Saturday Ray), or Mary’s Wash Day, by Piotr Stachiewicz. The title Saturday Ray comes from a tender Polish legend that says the sun must shine for at least a moment every Saturday so that the clothes of the Christ Child can dry before Sunday. It’s a beautiful glimpse into the hidden, ordinary life of the Holy Family. This piece has long been one of my favorite artworks to display in the laundry room. It captures a quiet, humble moment from Jesus’ early life and reminds us that Mary—though the Mother of God—also fulfilled the simple duties of a holy homemaker. Her example invites us to offer our own daily tasks, however small or big, as a prayer and an act of love for the glory of God.
