Scientific Art and Vintage Illustrations

Inspired by everything from patent prints of flying machines, to mathematical graphs of the human consciousness, this collection celebrates the science, beauty and hopefulness in vintage scientific illustration. We've reimagined these precious artifacts as the explosions of imagination they truly are, with color-soaked vibrancy and modern typography. We explore lovingly the works of William Betts, who, in the late 1800's, believed it was possible to graph human consciousness as a geometric function--, a mathematical equation on a graph, but for our reality as we know it. The flower-like functions on a 2D axis seem juxtaposed between science and art, yearning and detachment---truly, a mix between imagination and a dedication for scientific rigor. We also show the early designs for flying machines as illustrations of human earnestness. Sewing machines and similar tools show the evolution of trades of unspeakable antiquity, from needle to industry to generations of women's work. This collection contains art in traditional prints as well as office supplies, cases for phones, etc, and home decor. A few clothing items also represent the concepts collected here.
