Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is the most important traditional holiday in China and many Asian cultures. Celebrated on the first day of the lunar calendar, it usually falls between late January and mid-February. The festival symbolizes new beginnings, family reunions, and prosperity. Each year is associated with one of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals. The year 2025 is the year of the Snake.
Preparations begin weeks ahead with thorough house cleaning to sweep away bad luck and decorating with red couplets, lanterns, and symbols of good fortune. Families gather for a festive reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve, often featuring dumplings, fish, and other symbolic dishes. At midnight, firecrackers are set off to ward off evil spirits.
The celebration lasts up to 15 days, ending with the Lantern Festival. Traditions include giving red envelopes (hongbao) with money to children, lion and dragon dances, and visiting relatives. It is a vibrant celebration of culture, unity, and renewal.
