Black swallowtails are large butterflies ranging from southern Canada, where I am, to South America, where I am not. The black swallowtail has a wingspan of 7 - 8.5 cm. Females are usually bigger than males, and have light yellow markings inside the wings; in males the yellow is brighter. The female has a lot more blue in her lower wings and both genders have the inner "eyes" on the lower wings, in orange, black and white. When the wings are folded or closed, with outside wings showing, both genders look alike. The butterfly gets her Latin name from Polyxena of Greek myth, the youngest daughter of King Priam of Troy.
